Holistic dentistry is rising in popularity, offering dental patients a wider range of options for managing any dental issue.

Especially when it comes to dental implants, a traditional but invasive procedure that requires multiple steps and can be very uncomfortable, there are a number of different holistic options characterized by the trademarks of holistic dentistry. They are minimally invasive and make use of dental appliances made of biocompatible materials.

Why Choose an Alternative to Traditional Dental Implants?

For some patients, traditional dental implants are the right choice. It’s a common practice and has been in use since the 1950s as a means of replacing missing teeth.

By fusing titanium to bone, replacement teeth remain in place for years, but it can be a tedious, multi-step procedure that happens over many months. It’s not the best option for everyone.

It is a surgery, and it does come with risks and potential side effects, including inflammation and loss of bone at the site of the implanted tooth. The good news is that there are a number of alternatives available.

What Are the Holistic Alternatives to Dental Implants?

There are a few different holistic alternatives to dental implants, some of which are “permanent,” meaning they are not removed from the mouth for cleaning or any other purpose. Others can be removed at any time.

  • Permanent bridge: A dental bridge is a simple way to address a missing tooth or missing group of teeth by creating what looks like a small bridge of teeth that attach to existing teeth on either side of the gap created by the missing teeth. While the teeth on either side of the gap will need to be prepared for the bridge, it can take less than a week to complete with no surgery required.
  • Removable bridge: For those with few natural teeth remaining, a full arch bridge may be a good idea. Crowns are placed on the remaining natural teeth and a bridge is created using biocompatible materials that will essentially fit over these teeth and lock into place. No surgery is required for this option either, and the patient can remove the bridge if needed.
  • Dentures: Another removable appliance, dentures are created to replace the natural teeth without surgery. It is possible to get dentures with or without locks or magnets that help them to stay in place throughout the day. If locks or magnets are chosen, crowns will be placed on natural teeth to create a strong bond between the denture and the mouth.
